Response to Sixty Minutes
May 22nd, 2007After watching the Sixty Minutes program I now question everything I have ever heard or watched on that show. The lack of honest reporting was shocking. Many of you know I have worked in the Real Estate industry for over 16 years, I have never seen reporting on Real Estate that was so biased and boldly misrepresentative of our business industry. As one of our Real Estate agents put it, “it was all for entertainment and ratings.”
I found it to be embarrassing to have a REALTOR admit to being paid a commission that she felt like she didn’t earn. I wasn’t surprised; I have been vocal about the growing number of agents and companies that prefer to do very little for their costumers. I assume she conned a seller into paying a commission that was not reflective of her service. Perhaps she should have refunded a portion of it. Now, apparently, this agent feels more comfortable charging much less for her service, well no one knows better what that service is worth than her.
The local and national REALTOR Associations are in a tough spot. If we continue to allow agents and companies that opt for low standards to join the association, while we advertize that the public should choose a REALTOR for the next sale or purchase, the public is likely to have a bad experience. If the Associations raise the standards and requirements for minimum services, then many Real Estate companies will lose their business model and membership.
However I can’t help but ask, why should anyone have a problem with an organization that wants what is best for the customer and requires a high standard of it members? There are some people out there that want to shake things up by lying and misrepresenting the facts, in hopes of getting rich quick.
The public needs to be constantly reminded that all REALTORS and Brokerages are not the same!!!! Their service are vastly different and their results are dramatically varied! I strongly encourage people to thoroughly compare. If people will take the time, they will find that it is better for their bottom line, their time , their convenience and legal risk to have an experienced well trained agent who offers complete and true full service. I have much more to say about these issues. Check back in about a week.
